Getting started
Who costs a seat, and why
A Jira seat comes from a group that gives a product. Seatwise shows that chain for every person: person, then group, then product.
- Open People. It lists everyone who costs a Jira seat, and why.
- The chips at the top switch lists. “No Jira work in 90+ days” is the default list.
- The other lists are “New this month”, “Left, still own things”, “Kept on purpose” and “Everyone with Jira”.
- The “Why they cost a seat” column shows each group and the product it gives, for example jira-users → Jira.
- Seatwise counts seats for Jira and Jira Service Management. App, bot, customer and deactivated accounts are never counted.
- The “Status” column shows what a cleanup would do: “Ready to remove”, “Kept on purpose”, “Needs you first” or “Change in your identity provider”.
- People who worked in Jira recently show “Works in Jira”.
- Choose a name to open the person's details. The first notice says what Seatwise will do, for example “Safe to remove.”
- “Why … costs a seat” shows the chain: person → group → product → 1 seat.
- If two groups both give Jira, it is still one seat. It only goes away when both memberships go, so Seatwise removes both.
- “What … still owns” lists filters, dashboards, projects they lead, project roles and filter subscriptions.
- “Groups and where they are used” shows where each of their groups is used. Choose “See where” for the full list.
- Use the arrow buttons, or J and K, to move to the next or previous person. Esc closes the details.
What you should see
For each person, you can see which groups give the seat, when they last worked in Jira and what they still own.
If something is not right
A person's checkbox can't be ticked. They worked in Jira within your chosen time. Pointing at the box shows “Works in Jira, so Seatwise leaves this seat alone”.
The details say “Could not open this person.” Jira didn't answer. Choose “Try again”. If Seatwise says it couldn't find the person in the last check, run a new check first.
A person shows “Needs you first.” They lead a project, and Jira needs an active project lead. Choose “Pick a new lead”, change the lead in Jira, then run the cleanup again.
